Chapter Nineteen

Can we meet? -J

I want to text back that I’m busy. I’m a little upset with him because he left me hanging last night. He didn’t text, nothing. I pushed away things that needed to be done, all because I was making time for him. And then he ditched me.

It’s possible something came up, but why couldn’t he text me?

I want to slap myself. Why should he text me about his plans or whereabouts? It’s not like we’re dating. He’s free to cancel whenever he wants. But he didn’t cancel, technically. He just bailed. There’s a difference. If he would have canceled our plans, I wouldn’t have waited for him all night.

Ugh. Why am I looking so much into this? He just didn’t show up to a meeting. It’s not like he stood me up on a date .

Sure. When? I text back.

Now?

I peer at the clock. It’s nearly ten. Do I drop everything and go? It’s not like I’m doing anything important—just finishing up a book I started on Shabbos. And it’s not that late. Besides, we probably won’t be up there long. An hour, two tops.

Okay. In that abandoned hallway?

Yes .

I climb down the stairs. Sima’s in her room, most likely talking to Yanky. My parents must be sleeping because I don’t see them anywhere. No one will wonder where I am.

After slipping out of the apartment, I head to our secret location. Jeff is already there, sitting on a towel. He smiles a little when he sees me and motions for me to take a seat. I lower myself a few feet away from him and hug my knees. It’s a little cold here.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hi.”

“How are you?”

“Good. You?”

“All right.”

He gives me another small smile and I return one. He shifts his position, moving a bit closer to me. “Is something wrong?” he asks. His hair falls down his face and I can’t see his eyes clearly. Does he not remember that he ditched me last night?

“Nothing,” I say.

“Come on. Did I do something?” He pushes the hair away. “Oh, this is about what happened the other night, when I got upset at you. I’m sorry about that.”

“I just asked an innocent question. Why’s it such a secret where you work? I mean, it’s not like I’m demanding an answer, I just don’t understand. You know, never mind. You don’t have to explain anything.”

He sits back and runs his hand through his black strands. “No, you have a right to know.”

“I’m not your girlfriend, so technically I don’t.”

He turns to me, but doesn’t say a word. We sit in silence.

I stand. “You know something? Maybe I shouldn’t have come. I don’t want to fight with you. I should go.”

He holds out his hand like he wants to pull me down, then drops it to his side. “Please don’t leave.”

I sit back down.

He stares at the wall in front of him and sighs. “I don’t like talking about myself. ”

“Why?”

He doesn’t respond. Quiet yet again.

“Why did you ask me to meet you here?”

“I don’t know.
